10-Minute Lion’s Mane Mushroom Recipe

This delicious Lion’s Mane Mushroom Recipe is quickly sauteed in butter or olive oil until golden brown and then finished with a splash of soy sauce. A quick and easy side that takes less than ten 10 minutes to make and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

I’m super excited about sharing this lion’s mane mushroom recipe with you today! It may not look like much but it’s one of those recipes that I’ve made so many times, recently, that I’ve lost count. It’s so versatile and can be mixed into pasta, served on a sandwich, added to a stir-fry and so much more.

Lion’s mane mushrooms not only taste incredible, but this recipe uses just four key ingredients and takes only minutes to prepare. These mushrooms melt in your mouth and make everything you serve along with them taste just as amazing. So good that I could honestly probably finish all of these mushrooms in one sitting, by myself.

If you’re looking for a simple, yet flavorful vegetable side dish recipe that pairs well with almost any main entrée, look no further because this mushroom recipe is just that. Let’s get to all of the details!

What is a lion’s mane mushroom?

When I first noticed these in the grocery store, I was curious about this unique fungus too! Check out my lion’s mane mushroom informational post here to learn about everything from taste to health benefits. Here’s a quick summary of this mushroom variety:

  • Lion’s mane mushrooms are large, white, shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lion’s mane as they grow. Other names include hedgehog mushroom, bearded tooth, and pom pom. These are native to North America, Europe and Asia.
  • Where to buy it? These mushrooms are sometimes available at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. They are supposedly pretty easy to grow as well, and you can order a homegrown kit right on Amazon, if you want to grow them at home.
  • Are they healthy? Yes, they are known for their ability to boost brain health. They are said to protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, while also reducing mild symptoms of anxiety and depression. In addition, they may help to support focus, cognition, creativity, and productivity!
  • What do they taste like? They have a mildly sweet, earthy flavor – a lot of people say they taste a lot like seafood or crab meat.

Ingredients needed

This sautéed mushroom recipe is made with just 4 key ingredients. They are all inexpensive, easy to find and come together for the tastiest mushrooms!

You will need:

  • Lion’s mane mushrooms. You’ll need about 8 ounces of mushrooms for this recipe.
  • Butter or olive oil. For sautéing the mushrooms and giving them a wonderful buttery flavor.
  • Soy sauce. For flavor. Use tamari or coconut aminos for a gluten-free or soy-free alternative.
  • Sea salt. To really make the flavor pop.

How to make this recipe

As always, the full (printable) recipe is included below at the bottom of this post, but here is a brief overview of the process for how to cook lion’s mane mushrooms.

  1. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Brush off any dirt or debris. Cut off bottoms of the mushrooms, then slice them into 1/4 to 1/2-inch pieces.
  2. Sauté the mushrooms. In a dry, medium skillet over medium-high heat, cook the mushrooms for a couple of minutes on each side. The excess water will evaporate and mushrooms will reduce in size a bit. Add the butter and cook until browned, about 2 minutes. Flip and cook for another 2 minutes or until golden brown on each side.
  3. Serve. Add soy sauce and salt, enjoy!

Serving suggestions

Lion’s mane mushrooms are wonderful straight out of the pan or as a simple side, but here are some other tasty ways to serve them.

  • Spooned over eggs or in an omelet
  • Served on some sourdough bread with spicy mayo
  • Atop mashed or baked potatoes
  • Over your favorite grain or brown rice pasta
  • Paired with steak, chicken, beef, pork, or fish

Helpful tips and recipe notes

A few notes for perfect sautéed mushrooms!

  • Depending on how you plan to serve these mushrooms, you can cut them into thinner or thicker slices. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • Be careful not to burn the butter as you’re heating it. This recipe moves really quickly, so it’s best to stay close by and have all of your ingredients prepped and ready to go.
  • If the mushrooms feel heavy, they may be holding some moisture. I like to cook them in a dry pan over me medium-high heat to allow the excess moisture to evaporate.
  • If you have other veggies that you want to use or just want to switch things up, you can add them to the pan to cook with the mushrooms. I like to add thinly sliced onion sometimes and it’s really tasty!

Storing

Once you get the mushrooms home you want to store them in some type of bag – a paper bag is a great option because your mushrooms need to breathe. They will last up to five days when stored this way in the fridge. Your veggie drawer is the perfect place to keep them.

Cooked mushrooms are best eaten right away. However, if you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container for a couple of days.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces lion’s mane mushrooms
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter or extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Sea salt to taste

Notes

        There’s a farmers market here in Long Beach, California at the marina on Saturdays where a local mushroom grower sells it by the pound. I got a large 2 pound lion’s mane for $25.

    It was my first time preparing lion’s mane. This recipe was very helpful. Although I don’t think I am a fan of lions mane, I think this dish and recipe made it the best it possibly could be. I added a little bit of trader joes umami flakes.

      Gently brush off any loose dirt with a soft brush or damp paper towel. If they are very dirty, you can briefly rinse them under cold water, but try not to immerse them in water becasue they are super absorbent (like most mushrooms!).
