I’ve always loved buffalo chicken dip, but the traditional version can feel pretty heavy, especially if you’re trying to sneak in more protein or lighten up your meals. That’s what inspired me to experiment with lighter ingredients that still deliver the classic creamy, spicy flavor. After a few test rounds, this is the version that quickly became our family favorite (I don’t even think my kids know it’s made with cottage cheese and Greek yogurt!😉).
I know the cottage cheese and Greek yogurt combo might sound unexpected, but trust me… it works. Once blended, the dip is ultra-smooth, rich, and totally scoopable, with a serious protein boost that keeps you satisfied. It’s one of those recipes that feels indulgent but fits right into a balanced lifestyle, which is always a win in my book.
This is the kind of dip I’ll make for game day or parties, and I’m genuinely excited to share it. No one ever guesses it’s been lightened up, and I love knowing it’s packed with protein rather than relying on heavy ingredients like cream cheese or sour cream. It’s comfort food with a smarter twist!
Healthy Home Cook Tip: I personally love the texture of cottage cheese curds, but if you prefer smooth and creamy, simply blend the cottage cheese before adding it to the mixing bowl.
Healthy Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients
You’ll only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this high-protein buffalo chicken dip. I’ve included a quick, helpful note for each one so you know exactly what it does and how to get the best results.

- Shredded chicken breast: When I plan ahead, I use my go-to shredded slow-cooker chicken breast as the base for this recipe (it’s so easy and so good!). But when I’m short on time, Rotisserie chicken works just as well.
- Low-fat cottage cheese & Greek yogurt: The secret ingredients to a lighter version of buffalo chicken dip. No need for creamcheese or sour cream, because the combination of these two protein powerhouse ingredients gives you all the creaminess you need. I like to use low-fat, to keep things light, but full-fat works as well.
- Hot sauce: Use your favorite buffalo-style hot sauce and adjust to taste depending on how spicy you like it. My hubby always requests Frank’s hot sauce (it’s a classic!), so that’s what I used.
- Shredded cheddar cheese: If you have the time, buy your cheddar in a block and shred it on the large holes of a box grater. I find freshly shredded cheese always melts better than the pre-shredded options.
