I have been on a quest to sort through the muck and gain some clarity around which fats are best to cook with and which are best left raw and unheated.
Basically I want to know which oils to keep on hand to please both the food lover and the nutritionista that live inside my brain.
With out getting into all the dirty details, I can assure you that Coconut Oil has made the cut as one of my top-3 oils for cooking and in this video I try to explain why without getting too scientific.
I can’t help but think that somewhere between nutrients and vitamins there should be a lot of fun!
My goal with this video is to give you the nutritional highlights as well as the culinary wow-factor of coconut oil.
If you are unable to find coconut oil at your grocery store, below I have listed a few quality sources that you can order from online:
Please let me know if you have a brand you really love so I can share it here!
If you have any tips, ideas, input etc. that I missed in the video, I would love to hear about them in the comments below.
On the flip side, if your left with a question or need me to clarify anything bring it up in the comments as well. I’ll will try to answer as soon as possible!!
Enjoy!

Thanks for the great tips! Can’t wait to try it in eggs and on toast. I have only recently begun to use Coconut Oil… but love using it in my smoothies and sautéing veggies. Based on your other post, I’m trying to use regular {not extra virgin} olive oil for things like meats for italian based cooking {i.e.: when the coconut flavor will not work}.

Hi Dani, first I LOVE your blog and everything is very instructive… Keep up to Awesome work.
About the coconut oil, how can I use it if I want to ‘roast’ some veggies in the oven. Normaly, I was use to coat my brocoli or green beans with OVOO, salt and pepper, but now I would prefer using Cocunut. But, since its solid, it won’T really coat ! Would you put in few sec in the microwave and then, up on the veggies ??
Thanks for your help,
Nancy

BTW – I have thrown away all my lotion and have moved to pure coconut oil. Barleans is the best and I use it on my face and all over. So I have one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. Everyone has complimented me that my skin looks gorgeous! I found out thru extensive reading that coconut oil is really good for your skin and has healing properties. fyi!

I love coconut oil! I buy the same brand you show there and anyone in Ontario, Canada can find it at a larger Loblaws brand of store that has a ‘natural foods’ section.
I am not a huge coconut fan, but I find the taste often goes undetected. I use it to bake all the time, and when a dish I am making has a strong flavour (indian dishes for example) I use coconut oil in place of the butter or olive oil and I cannot detect the coconutty taste. In milder dishes I can taste the coconut flavour and therefore stick to other fats. Overall though, it is such a great oil to use and every time I make a substitution with it I feel good about it.

This video is fantastic!!!
We love coconut oil! Dr Sears recently posted a link on Facebook, which I thought was interesting. It mentions coconut oil as something that might be beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and more. It said it could actually reduce some of the symptoms. If its true, how great that it is so easy to incorporate into the diet! Even if it doesn’t… It tastes great!

Yes, I have used coconut oil on my rough, cracked heels. Liberally rub into heels, put on socks and go to bed. After 3 days my heels are smooth.
Also, if any of your viewers live in an Azure Standard delivery zone you can get coconut oil cheaper with no delivery charges if your order is $50 or more. You can double up your order with a friend(s) to reach the minimum. A drop site has to have a minimum of $500 for a delivery to be made. They will help you know if there is a drop site near you. You will meet others through this cooperative who might gladly add your coconut oil to their orders if that is all you want to buy.
Azure Standard co-op is increasing their delivery areas all the time. Right now it’s mostly in the western half of the US. check them out. The best way to see their whole line of products is to order a catalog. Their web search feature isn’t the greatest. A catalog costs 45 cents.

LOVE coconut oil – I’ve been using it in the kitchen and even for leg shaving!
I do the requisite roasting/sauteeing of veggies with it, using in place of butter, etc. etc. Some favorite dishes: use to make popcorn on the stovetop (holy hell, soooo good), in place of butter in pound cake (jeez, yum), in any kind of Indian inspired dish, and my FAVORITE: Shrimp with garlic, ginger coriander, scallions and coconut oil over brown rice.
I’m hungry.

Hi Dani,
When I’m making savory dishes, I don’t prefer the taste and smell of coconut oil in my food. Would it be ok then to use expeller-pressed coconut oil? It is refined but doesn’t use chemicals. However, you mentioned it is still de-odorized and bleached, so that doesn’t sound too good? What is a girl to do?
Thanks,
Afrina

Hi Dani,
I love a breakfast of eggs and a slice of the bread you stated in the video along with a lavish spread of coconut oil and a teaspoon of cinnamon spread into it since the spice is good for those with high blood sugar problems and it is so good!!!! Natural medicine can be yummy!!!!

I tried cooking in coconut oil tonight for the first time, and….WOW…was it amazing. The fish turned out perfectly. I had no idea the oil was so fragrant and….heady…. I’ve gotten some GREAT tips from this web site so far, and I look forward to learning more. Dani has the perfect blend of food knowledge and psychology to really help people like me make some positive changes in their diet AND in their thinking. Excellent work.

Hi Dani!
I’m a student and recently learned that coconut oil is all saturated fat and has more saturated fat than pork lard! My teacher is a registered dietician. So I am really confused about coconut oil! Please help me out!
Thanks Dani, you are awesome!

I also want to add that benefits of coconut oil are really far reaching and I am talking from my personal experience and those of my nearest & dearest. Basically I learnt about benefits of coconut oil about a year ago by coming across the book called ‘Eat fat, lose fat’ and thank God I did. It’s a real life saver and it also kick started my healthy living journey. I personally managed to get rid of my PMS after nearly 20 years of pain and lost over 10 lb. My mum lost over 20 pounds in about 8 months, believe it or not, simply by eating a table spoon of coconut oil twice a day before meals, oh and if you’re going through menopause, coconut oil is a must have in your life because fats are essential for your body to keep hormonal balance and when do you need more balance than during menopause, right?!
Oh and my absolute favorite is home made coconut ice-cream where I use fresh coconut and of course coconut oil, you can never have too much coconut in my opinion 😉
Dani says
Thanks for sharing. ESPECIALLY the ice cream. That sounds amazing!!

Coconut oil is also great on baked potatoes, instead of butter. I also stopped using lotion on my body and face and have been using coconut oil.
