How To Peel & Devein Shrimp (Video)

Time or money?

When it comes to cooking (and ironically life) you almost always have this choice.

Do you take the extra time, save a little money and do the dirty work yourself?  Or do you save a little time, spend a little extra money and have the dirty work done for you.

I think most of us probably do a little of both and I certainly don’t believe there is a right or wrong, simply what works best at the time.

However, when it comes to shrimp, I can tell you first hand that when you buy shrimp that is pre-peeled and deveined it never tastes as fresh and delicious as when you do it yourself.

I’ve done side by side comparisons on this one and can promise you that cleaning and deveining the shrimp yourself will result in a superior end product.

So needless to say, it’s worth knowing how to do and I wanted to be sure you knew.

  1. Hi Dani,

Thanks for the video! I just used it to clean shrimp for the first time this weekend, and it was a big help!

Would you consider doing a ‘Shrimp 101’ video? I’m struggling with what things I should pay attention to when buying shrimp.

For instance, I’ve heard to avoid shrimp with a yellowish tinge due to possible bleaching, but the two batches I’ve bought (from different grocery stores) both tasted good, but the raw shrimp definitely had a slight yellowish tinge near the leg area. So I’m not sure if that’s bad, even though the shrimp tasted absolutely fine.

And then the other thing is country of origin – I haven’t seen shrimp from the US so far (it’s always places like Thailand), and so I’ve just bought what they had…but I’ve heard that foreign shrimp aren’t very good for you since there are lax regulations that can lead to pesticides, antibiotics, etc in the shrimp. I wanted to see if you had any thoughts or recommendations on this.
