Can’t wait to hear what all you healthy eaters do with dried herbs and spices in your kitchen!

my absolute favorite way to use dried herbs and spices is using them to season yam or kabocha fries! it makes my entire house smell absolutely heavenly
Well, since my husband and I started healthier eating a couple years back, we’ve relied heavily on spices (rather than load up on fats, carbs, etc). Chicken is just chicken. BUT! Add some curry and some vegetables in the mix…YUM! So much better!
I am “newer” to clean eating, but do love to use spices so far! Of course I’m partial to the old pumpkin/cinnamon…anything sweet. And, italian seasoning is perfect for my veggies! Oh how I need a little spice!
I love adding dried herbs when making fresh bread! It makes for great tasting sandwiches!
I don’t think I’ve ever not made a dish without adding some kind of spice to it. I even add spice to fruit..makes a nice tasty dessert!
My favorite way to use spices is on cottage cheese. I love loading it up with cinnamon and nutmeg and adding some walnuts. It’s a great breakfast with tons of flavor.
Lynn:
Dried herbs are a great addition to frittatas. They can change eggs to any ethnic dish you desire. Some example are; add oregano for a greek frittata, basil for italian, cumin for spanish, curry for an indian flare , and so on..you get the picture. That is my favorite way to use dried spices.
I am a Spice Queen! Usually the hotter and spicer the better in my house! Spices take the place of extra fat (butter, oil) in recipes. With a little dash of this and sprinkle of that I can cook a delicious healthy meal for my family and they never miss that extra calorie laden step. With a little galic and pepper I can take simple broccoli from “eww.. I don’t like this” to “Mom, can I have some more of those spicey trees?”
I love using dried herbs and spices on just about anything – I cook a lot of chicken, whole grains, and veggies, but I try to add something different each time so that my taste buds are always on their toes.
I love using spices! I have eight children and we all have our favorites! I enjoying introducing them to new foods/spices and cultures, it’s not only healthy, but fun!
)
My favorite way to use dried herbs and spices is by making rubs for any types of meats. Our family’s favorite is any kind of rub for pork chops. In the past my kids have always said porkchops are boring and dry and now I spice them up with all kinds of different rubs or just a mixture of a few dried herbs and wow them at dinner when pork chops or any meats hit the table. I also personally love them on roasted veggies with a little olive oil, even the kiddies eat them that way!
Sadly I am not too spice savvy (which is why I am always checking for great new recipes – thanks Dani!) I do like adding either rosemary or basil after I boil new small potatos. After I drain the potatos, I add a little olive oil, the dried herb and a touch of ground sea salt. Heat through and serve.
I’d love to win this. I use spices all the time to make bland things more exciting. The more spice I use, the less I feel the need to include extra fats and oils. I especially love Moroccan spices lately, with cinnamon and cumin.
And I tweeted:

i love to toss dried herbs into a basic vinaigrette recipe, which can then be used as a salad dressing or a marinade! i also like to toss some on freshly-made popcorn to give it some extra flavor without fat.
A few of my favorite way to use herbs and spices
Roasted vegetables with Herbs de Provence
Apple Pie Spice with my oatmeal
Now you have me thinking about pumpkin pie spice in my oatmeal
Jayne
I love using herbs on my cooked egg whites. I basically fry them in a nonstick skillet with no oil and add seasoning. It changes something ordinary or plain into something really wonderful!
I am a recovering salt addict and I used to put salt on EVERYTHING! I have recently discovered that I can use herbs and spices to help flavor my dishes in place of salt. My favorite spice lately is curry! I love putting curry in my quinoa and veggies!
We have been trying to eat healthier and it’s amazing what spices can do to increase the flavor of plain old chicken or pasta! Love them!
I use pumpkin pie spice to flavor my sweet potatoes right from the oven, I also use it in oatmeal with 1/4 cup pumpkin puree it is absolutely delicious. I flavor my skinless/boneless chicken breasts with a different spice each night, sometimes mexican or curry and even occas Italian with some zucchini ribbons and tomato sauce. the possiblities are endless !!!
I bought a 2 giant boxes of sweet potatoes from the farmers market last fall, and every other day or so I pull one or two out and throw some different spices on them for a change of pace. Sadly, the boxes are just about empty.
I love using spices when i’m roasting vegetables. I probably never use the same spices twice but i love all of the variations. Garlic, rosemary, thyme, montreal steak spice, italian seasoning etc.
I’ve also come across a great new spice called poudre douce which is a 14th century spice mix that i use for fruits or desserts!!
I don’t think I could cook without spices, they are so vital in adding flavor without fat or calories! One of my favorite purposes for them is to add cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to my morning bowl of oats. It really does make the breakfast.
I love adding pumpkin spice to change up my morning oatmeal and assorted different spices with vinegar to create clean salad dressings!
I love spices. Chili powder is essential in my kitchen. I use it on potatoes, chicken, and pasta dishes.
I love using spices in my cooking. I love garlic, oregano, basil, chili powder. Love teaching my nephew to cook and he gets to sprinkle in the spices! So fun!
Thanks!
Maggie M.
I love adding a tiny bit of heat and flavor with chili powder, it is great in egg whites.
I use spices to mix up chicken… we eat a lot of it, so to keep it from getting bland and tiresome, I change up the spices I use on it regularly. Chicken is a great canvas for flavor! My new favorite is a rub of chili powder, garlic powder, onion salt and smoked paprika.
I love rosemary on my sweet potatoes!! I would eat this for my last meal on earth! lol
I love cocoa with some chili powder kick added. Vegan chocolate loaf with a hint of chili powder in it is divine!
I love to add spices to my pasta sauce.
I also love to add spices to mashed potatoes. it is something that is so unexpected.
Ok, here is the best way we use dried herbs!!! My husband and I are HUUUGE fans of the show “Chopped” on the Food Network. Unfortunely it is winter here so we can’t use fresh. We have started our own “Chopped” show. This Sunday is our first competition!! We have three neighboors being our judges. We have given them a alotment of money to pick out our basket foods. We are setting up our “pantry” and one of the things we don’t have are fresh herbs, so we agreed on good quality dried!! I’ll let you all know how it turns out!!!
I use dried herbs and spices everywhere–roasted or steamed veggies, chicken or fish. I use different combos to create italian, asian or indian flavors. In oatmeal and plain yogurt, rather than use sugar or other sweeteners I rely on cinnamon, pumpkin pie or apple pie spice. I sprinkle cinnamon everywhere, in coffee, on my morning banana, my afternoon apple, etc. I don’t know what I do without my spices! I also sprinkle some dried herbs on my salads when I don’t have fresh available.
I usually work out in the morning and love to follow it with a good clean breakfast. I love using cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla in my oats. I’m also a huge egg fan and love to experiment with spicing up my egg creations. Some of my faves are fennel seed, nutmeg, chili powder, curry, Italian seasoning and hot paprika. A spicy morning is a good morning!
Basil and oregano in my tomato sauce – either for spaghetti or for lasagna – yum! Add some dried mushrooms and a few other goodies like green pepper, onion, maybe a little Italian sausage – and you have a great meal with plenty of leftovers to freeze for other lunches or dinner. With just two of us in the house, I find myself freezing alot of things for future meals and that works out super – just put the frozen entree on a microwave plate and waalah! a superb meal in just minutes.
Curry powder on popcorn!
I love to make my own pizza dough and sauce and use lots of seasonings for the sauce. Yum!
I like to toss some dry Oregano in with some olive oil, light mozzarella cheese, juicy tomatoes and fresh basil for a basic Capresse inspired salad.
From morning oatmeal, to lunch salad dressing and dinners 100% homemade pizza, I spice it all.
I am so excited about this free giveaway! I love using spices of all kinds in my cooking, and I love making my own spaghetti sauce with all kinds of fun spices to make it zing! I pour it over my spaghetti squash which I LOVE and its awesome!
I love to use Italian seasoning in Greek yogurt for a dip with veggies, and in tuna. Chili powder and cumin in ground turkey, add in some balck beans and salsa for yummy taco salad. Oh and my other “fave” is curry spices mixed with light coconut milk for stir fry. Thanks for hosting such a fabulous giveaway!!
I use spices almost everytime I cook I have alot of them and always go thru them to use them. Sometimes it comes out overpowering but most of the time it enhances the meal. I’ve had some a long time and they should be thrown out but I hate waste even though they don’t work anymore. I love the choices you have.
I love fresh spices! A co-worker of mine often brings in “extra” fresh spices from her window garden. I can’t always use up the “extra” – so I dry the spice and freeze it. I love having fresh spices from my freezer in the winter – I often make stews, soups and chilis. I think all my dishes taste better using fresh rather than store bought spices.
We use alot of chili powder in the meatless chili that has been a staple in our home this winter season..I also use lemon pepper and garlic powder in my white bean(hummus style) dip/spread.
…well, i eat mostly seafood and often bake them with herbs and spices…o, and curry powder in any lentil/dal/mung beans type of dish, totally yum-o!
I love spices! Lately I have been using them mostly in homemade soups – or even storebought soups that I then add extra veggies and spices too – YUM!
My favourite way to use dried spices is when you tell me to!! We make several recipes from your blog each week. I’m not a super creative chef yet, so for now I mostly follow recipes. I try to buy fresh sometimes, but mostly I just used dried right now. Hoping to get an herb garden growing next spring.

I am fairly new to clean eating, and as I learn to steer away from processed foods in sauces and processed seasoning like Shake and Bake, I’m experimenting with the few spices that I have and love to use them on everything from chicken and fish to eggs. I’m not a salt person, and I enjoy the flavors that interesting and tasty spices can add to food, however they can be pricey and I just don’t have many to really get my feet wet with it yet. I would simply adore a spice set like this that could really get me started with it. I’m feeling better than I ever have now that I’m eating clean, but it is a more expensive way to go. Its worth it though!!
what a fabulous giveaway!
after starting the transformation to clean eating, i am most surprised at how my taste buds seem to have ‘woken up’ to spices! the fatty foods i used to eat all the time didn’t give me the chance to really *taste* food.
i love rosemary with roasted veggies, and italian seasoning to give a bit of a kick!
I love roasting sliced almonds with a variety of spices, olive oil, and salt to suit whatever I am putting them on.
I am new to spices, but I used nutmeg in my butternut squash lasagna yesterday. YUM! I also love adding cinnamon to my morning oatmeal.
I cook a lot of Indian, Cajun and Moroccan food which require lots of spices which for me equals flavor. Often I grind my one spices for the Indian recipes as it gives the most fresh taste. We also love onions and parsley.
I love making a huge pot of soup that eventually turns into stew after a few days. And I call it “Everything But the Kitchen Skin Stew” All and every veggie I get from farmer’s market and some veggie broth AND every spice in my cupboard…including a dash of cinnimon… and WOW yummy. It even goes into the egg omlett.
Hi Dani!
I add herbs and spices to everything, different herbs and spices can totally transfor a dish, even if it’s the same base ingredients.
My favorite way to use them is with my son, he’s 3.5 and I love getting him in the kitchen dashing and sprinking random amounts of different herbs and spices into our meals.
I love using dried herbs when I’m roasting veges.
It adds such great flavor!!
I’ve been trying to use spices in everything. My newest way to use spices – adding it to my ground coffee before brewing it. Gives me flavored coffee without the extra unnecessary calories and artificial sweeteners.
I like to experiment with different dried herbs in making fresh bread. Yum!
I love making grilled pizzas with lightly Sautéed vegetables with curry powder and other herbs.
I didn’t use spices until I started eating clean and now spices are a daily staple in most of my meals! I found out that I relied too heavily on store bought products that were already flavored to add kick to my meals, but I have discovered that using my own spices with my own clean ingredients really gives my meals so much more flavor than I ever could have imagined!!! One way that I have really liked using my spices is to jazz up my protein sources. I cook my boneless skinless chicken breasts and then sprinkle on whatever seasoning will go with my meal that night to tie everything together! I made Turkey Chili last night and relied on my own spices instead of the store bough packages and I must way it was delish!!!
I love using spices. I’m Italian, so always grew up with the dried oregano, basil, etc. So good on a chopped up zucchini sauteed with a little olive oil. I was recently introduced to curry powder and it’s AMAZING on a baked sweet potato. My new favorite easy dinner and it’s fabulous as a side for sauteed or baked fish. Yum! I love your site, full of great ideas!
I have no clue how to cook WITHOUT spices.. it wakes up the flavor of everything! I love to make sweet potato fries with rosemary and fresh garlic, of course.
I love to use spices to add a flavorful kick to butternut squash fries. YUM
I like to use my crockpot a lot and using fresh herbs just doesn’t work as well.
I make a great vegetarian chili w/ cumin and different chilli powders and Mexican oregano. Minestrone w/ Italian herbs works well in the slowcooker too.
Even my meats get a nice dry rub before going in the crock.
Since I need to use less salt(health reasons), I don’t know what I would do without my herbs and spices!
Fantastic giveaway, thanks!
I am “new” to clean eating, but do love to use spices. I happen to come across your utube video to help me with making mashed cauliflower and i’ve been hooked every since. Trying all kinds of spices and different recipes.
I love mixing dried spices in plain greek yogurt- crushed red pepper, basil, parsley, garlic powder. The spiced yogurt is a great healthy sauce for whole wheat pasta or a dip for pita chips. Yum!
Hi Dani
Oh goodness I’ve been following your blog for a while and have made many of the recipes but this one with the free spice giveaway
I’m in the UK so we can’t get Taco Seasoning, Lemon Pepper, Cajun Seasoning, Mexican Seasoning and Pumpkin Pie Spice. So I’m in ! Since we started clean eating we been making use of spices to add that extra kick to food, one of my favourite quick meals is your turkey skillet meal with oregano, sweet potato fries with cumin, hint of chilli, salt and pepper and on the sweet side I like making apple sauce with cinnamon and cloves apple pie flavour without the pastry. I’m so excited! but don’t tweet would a facebook mention work ???
Julia
I love using spices to make homemade french fries.. i make home made french toast and there’s nothing better then adding spices to them.. i make taco salad i use spices then the package stuff so i control the spices…
I eat quite a bit of protein, including cottage cheese. Cottage cheese can get old after awhile, so I am constantly adding new spices to it which give it a whole new flavor!
It’s like trying a new food every time I try a new spice!
I just tried this new recipe this week with brown rice, chickpeas, balsamic vinegar and CURRY POWDER… yum! Just cook the rice with the curry, mix it with the chickpeas (I used canned, but I’m planning to try un-canned soon!) and add as much balsamic as you like! I’m starting to add curry to a lot of stuff… so so good.
I use plain balkan style yogurt and do my own herb and garlic mix in it with tons of dried oregano, basil, scallions, dried and fresh garlic and a little bit of dried lemon zest for a zing! I dont add the mayo because it has so much herb flavor you dont miss it! I toast some whole wheat pita peices, just to avoid the deep fried chips.
I love my party snack that i make for our friend when they come over for a game night or a movie night. It feels like you getting something so naughty with the chips and dip…but really it’s almost guilt free!
I love to use spices on my chicken and on oven baked fries. Yummy
I like to zip up my salads with different spices. I usually have 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil with some balsamic vinegar on my salads, but to add that extra flavor boost I’ll add cajun spice, lemon pepper (my favorite) or sometimes a Mrs. Dash blend. I don’t need to add alot salt at all if I use a yummy seasoning!
I like to use spices all the time–they kick up the flavour on everything from breakfast yogurts/oatmeal to soups, vegetables, fruits, stir-fry’s, and on and on. My friends have joked that I’ll always add my special “fairy dust” to any recipe.
I use dried spices on everything! I don’t think I eat anything without some type of dried sppice on it. I’m a spice freak! How can you not like them?
I use spices to entice my children to eat a healthy diet. I make pumpkin oatmeal – heavy on the cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. These spices transform the pumpkin into a delicious treat.
As I started western cooking, it is inevitable to start adding small bottles of dried spices into my pantry. Not long, a dozen crowded in. It brought this wonderful moment that when my husband said, as if he regretted we were not in the Starbucks, ” it would be only perfect to have a sprincle of cinnamon on top of the cream (of my coffee)” I can respond in less than 30 seconds and said “Ta-la!”
I love dried spices. I love to make my own ranch dip mix. I make up a jar of mixed dried spices and then add a teaspoon or two to yogurt, mayo and buttermilk. It’s great on a salad or served as a dip for veggies….yum!!! The ones in the store often contain msg. and I hate the thought of serving that to my kids or to my husband:)
Dani, I found you on youtube originally and now follow your blog. I have tried so many of your recipes and they are always so good and I love the fact that they are healthy too. Thank you.
I use dried spices in my kitchen. I cut up sweet potatoes or yams in to french fry cuts and toss in olive oil then sprinkle with chili powder and bake them. YUM!
It’s hard for me to say. I use such a different variety of spices in my cooking and I use it on everything to add that extra zip of flavor.
I use spices in everything! Love them.
I love to use dry spices for soup. Nothing makes soup taste better than a good pairing of dried spices and herbs! I use fresh herbs every once and awhile, but I love the convenience of dried.
i use them in practically everything!!!!! i love using them on chicken breasts…to season ground turkey, in meatballs…practically in everything i make
You inspire me!! And I am thrilled that you are now doing baby food! I am a Huge fan of this! I think it is wonderful that a Young Mommy Likes to Spice things Up!! You Spice up our life on a regular Basis Thank-you for dedicating your life to Making ours Healthier!!
I use dried spices in my cucumber salad, cabbage salad and often seaweed salads. I bet pumpkin pie spice, some stevia and cut up apples would be great!
Oh Boy, Spices & Seasonings are HUGE STAPLES in my kitchen… I use cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice & nutmeg EVERY SINGLE DAY… along with basil, thyme, rosemary, dill, cilantro, garlic, sesame seeds, pepper, really the whole lot of em!
My favorite meal (other than my breakfast which consists of: pureed pumpkin & roasted butternut squash baked with cinnamon & nutmeg)… is salmon baked on top of spaghetti squash sprinkled with Italian seasoning… garlic… onion powder… my goodness this meal is delicious… so delicious in fact… that I eat it 5 times a week!!! Can you believe it, 5 times a week – ha ha! Let’s just say, I am probably the only one in the world who may have omega-3 limits WAY ABOVE normal… and my spice & herb intake… my antioxidant levels: through the roof! ha ha!!!
Seriously though try making this; the salmon & herbs flavors are absorbed by the spaghetti squash, amazing!
I love to mix my lean protein with a variety of spices to keep it interesting. I can’t wait to read all these comments and see what folks who eat clean are doing … yum yum. Most recently I’ve been using some mild curry powder on some lean low salt roasted turkey breast that I cut into chunks. and then I mix it all with 1/4 sweet potato and 1/4 sour green apple cut into chunks and then put on it some sort of greens … Thanks for the opportunity to add some more spices!
I love to use paprika and cinnamon on sweet potatoe fries. Paprika and cayanne powder on chicken. Yumm. Blackening spice with no salt on fish. Baked.
I am a major fan of making dips with spice combinations. You can buy the “dip mixes” to mix into sour cream or yogurt etc. and those are great, but you can also create your own and be creative with different flavour combinations. I now have a giant urge to mix up some dip for a snack with veggies later!
I use spices professionally and personally. Professionally, I manage a community meal program that serves 45-65 guests a free dinner five nights per week. We have made good nutrition a strong focus across all of our hunger-relief programs, and the best way to boost the palatability of low-fat, low-sodium recipes is to season well! Thyme is one of my signature flavors, and I have a volunteer who can sneak nutmeg into just about anything
Personally, I use spices all of the time to pick up the taste of plain veggies & proteins. Lately I’ve discovered a new application- protein shakes! Cardamom in my mocha whey shake, nutmeg in my vanilla, even cinnamon in my strawberry. Makes those liquid meals a little more interesting!
I love Sumac, a dried ground berry used in the Middle East in place of lemon and salt. I use it on my green mixed salads with virgin olive oil and rice vinegar. It can also be used on fish, chicken, and other seafood to give it that tart, lemony zing. Give it a try..you will love it.
Dani, thanks for the chance to win this great looking spice set! I’m East Indian by heritage, so spices are the backbone of almost every meal. Although there are infinite great ways to use dried herbs and spices, I have to say that fun, creative vinaigrettes are my favorite. I love a high quality finishing oil, sometimes gussied up with something as unlikely as lemon pepper or chili powder. With a splash of fresh citrus, I am in food heaven.
I first became a fan when I watched your 101 video on Quinoa. I had no idea what Quinoa was and needed help!
I now fix it a number of ways just by changing the spices. The husbands favorite is with Turmeric, following the recipe for Yellow rice and peas. Using the quinoa instead of rice. My favorite is with Herbs de Provence and sauteed mushrooms. A Spice Set would be a great addition to my kitchen. I LOVE the videos! Keep them coming!
TTFN
I never use spice blends, primarily because I have never thought to buy any. What a fun gift this would be to get to try so many serious blends!
I really like using cinnamon…on apples or on a peanut butter sandwich…it is a good spice for satisfying my sweet tooth!
Some taco seasoning would be awesome because it’s seems like it would be much “cleaner” than a taco seasoning mix – the same with some of the others. Sounds like a neat giveaway!
I tweeted this too!
http://twitter.com/sequacity
I love making my own taco seasoning and I love cinnamon and nutmeg in my oatmeal! I’d love to try some new blends!
just tweeted https://twitter.com/micaela6955/status/9759419507
I use dried herbs on just about anything, but I LOVE to throw it on avocado! Yummo!
I love to use spices for just about everything I cook. I even add spices to things that don’t call for them just to jazz things up a bit
)))))))
I love to use spices to enhance the flavor of chocolate. I love to make chocolate and truffles as gifts. Try adding cayenne, or dried lavender, ginger, etc…to the mix and it makes the perfect unique gift! I also love using Herbs to Provence and Lavender and Honey as unique ways to add yummy flavor to roasted chicken.
I use spices daily also, from oatmeal with cinnamon to veggies, i use onion, dill, spinach herb mix to garlic on my meat. gives everything such a boost! much easier to eat healthy with a extra dash of spice!
As others have said already, spices are what I use to transform plain food into something special and unique with amazing flavors without adding fat and unnecessary calories. Everything that I make has some sort of spice in it from my morning egg whites and oatmeal to the chicken breast and veggies that I serve for supper. I LOVE SPICES!
I put dry spices and herbs in ALL of my cooked dishes! I should have been born as Indian because I LOVE the taste of cumin and paprika in almost any dish. An easy and quick meal I normally make is a tofu scramble with firm tofu and some veggies (normally zucchini or cauliflower) with some cumin, paprika, and red pepper. I am eyeing that pumpkin spice one in the collection, I bet that would be so delicious in my daily morning bowl of oatmeal!
I use spices are rubs and to season my various chicken dishes. Spices also perk up veggies.
Oh my! It has been fun reading how every one uses spices in such creative ways
In the morning time, I use pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon in oatmeal with bananas and blueberries. Pumpkin pie spice is also yummy on sweet potatoes or acorn squash with some maple syrup. When I make chili or bean soup…anything goes! Cumin
coriander, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, a few grinds of black pepper…
I love to use various seasonings to make a plain chicken breast more interesting. Depending on the seasoning you use, it can totally change the meal! Thanks for the chance. This looks fantastic!

Hello I am new at clean eating. I just saw your video on Quinoa on you tube and I wanted to learn more so I decided to visit your site. I love to make homemade marinara sauce, with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic and dried parsley and sweet basil. Many times when I am unable to find fresh basil I opt for the dried and it comes out great. I also like to use the dried oregano in my antipasto.
Dried spices are the best way to get an international taste from around the world. Whenever I go on vacations I make sure I stop at a local supermarket to pick up a local spice from that region. After returning from Italy with loads of olive oil and dried spices, I had many months of enjoyable time in the kitchen making some of the dishes I’ve tasted on my vacation. Using dried spices and getting into the mood of Italian cooking really brought back wonderful memories of Italy just from being in my kitchen : )
I use herbs and spices everything. I started putting herbs on my scrambled egg concoction. Also, I put some herbs and spices on bread.
Hi,
I like to use cajun seasoning, garlic and parsley to seasoning baby red potatoes. I put the potatoes in a bag with a little olive oil and the spices and let sit for a hour or until you’re ready to cook. They are great cooked on the BBQ in a cast iron skillet.
Thank you,
Nancy
