Mango Puree

This will be the second and the last of the single pureed foods that I post!

If there is any part of you that is wondering why, the reason is simple…

there is not much to share when it comes to making a puree!  Simply pop the food (either raw or cooked depending on the ingredient) in the food processor and zoom away.  Add a bit of water, milk, or formula to thin it out and you’re done.

It’s pretty basic.
I can tell already that I am definitely NOT going to be a “make-the-kids-a-separate-meal” kind of Mom.  Nope.  We are gonna have to find a way to make foods work for the whole family.
This mango is a perfect example.  I actually bought them for Katie because they were on sale BUT once I started peeling and cutting them up I figured, “hey, why not prep an extra mango while I’m at it and then pop it in the fridge for a head start ingredient sometime during the week”.  I thought at the very least I could stir it into some yogurt or cottage cheese.
And low and behold I came up with this yummy salad.  Something I would have never thought of if that pre-prepped mango was waiting in the fridge to be eaten up!
So my tip of the day for all the baby-food making parents out there:
Make the ingredients for baby work for the rest of the family too!!  (Otherwise you may find yourself running down the grocery store aisles pulling your hair out or mindlessly walking in circles;)).

Mangoes are hard to peel and cut up, though. My whole summer was transformed when a friend recommended the OXO Mango Slicer. I am not one for single-purpose gadgets, but this one works and I think using it actually yields me more fruit than if I peeled and sliced it myself. http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/sku7090897/
Yes, I totally agree, purees are easy! But I blog about simple baby food each week on citybaby.posterous.com because I think most people are looking for inspiration and a little encouragement goes a long way. :)

YUM! The mango looks so yummy! I’d love to eat this right out of the bowl… or freeze it and make a little dessert treat. Lucky lucky girl, little Katie!

Try adding some lime to the mango puree – kicks it up a little and gets the babies used to the cirtusy taste. My 7m/o loves it! It’s his favorite fruit. I also give him little pieces of mango, which he prefers. He’s into chewing…

Citypixie – Thanks for the tip!

Mary- I hear ya! Perhaps a little vanilla ice cream?!

Melissa – Great idea! Katie like pieces of foods too! I think it is more fun for her when she can be interactive with the food:)
